When it comes to the beauty of science, it’s tough to beat the Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment. This photo, courtesy of Berkeley Lab’s Roy Kaltschmidt, shows the photomultiplier tubes that line the walls of the massive underground detectors to amplify neutrino interactions. We’re members of the international collaboration trying to pin down the parameters of the famously elusive neutrino.
Neutrinos are more awesome than you can imagine. For starters, these itty-bitty beasties are:
born in the hearts of stars and other fission furnaces
subatomic shape-shifters, subtly dancing between flavors
ghostlike, passing through planets and people unhindered and undetected
hiding secrets about the birth of our universe
The Big Bang ought to have created the same amount of matter and antimatter, which would mean that life as we know it wouldn’t exist because those two frenemies annihilate when they meet. Obviously, that’s not how it turned out, but the ways that neutrinos switch from flavor to flavor might hold the key to the reason we have more matter than antimatter in the universe.

Take a look into the eye of the collider. The STAR detector, home to trillions of particle collisions every year, is one of two enormous ‘digital cameras’ we use at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to capture snapshots of particles busting open.
This picture is of the awesomely named Time Projection Chamber, which has been undergoing months of upgrades and maintenance work. During the summer, when the collider wasn’t running, our technicians and engineers checked each cable connection, upgraded the image sensors, and installed new superconducting magnets to steer the particle beams into perfect head-on collisions.
Now, the detector has been put back into place and we’re gearing up for the next run of RHIC in a few months.

MISSING FROM GLENELG, SOUTH AUSTRALIAGuys, my little man ran away last night. He managed to pull a latch on the window of his room and get outside. I have been searching high and low since 10am this morning. Theres not a pole in Glenelg that doesn’t have his face on it, or a letterbox without a flyer in it. I was called in the afternoon by a man who said he had seen him on Augusta Street (near Jetty Road) running along his fence, we have been targeting that area but still no luck. He is likely to be hiding in bushy or confined areas, and moving along fences and gutters, as ferrets tend to stay close to walls. He can be picked up, he may nip out of fear but please do your best to catch him. You can put him in a cat carrier or lock him in a room, call me and I’ll come pick him up immediately. You could also use fresh/cold cuts of meat to lure him out. Please, please share this everywhere. He means the world to me and I’m completely heartbroken. I am willing to offer a cash reward for his return, I just need him safely back with me. :(
